A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
